Prayer Quilts

Can you touch a prayer?

Can you pull it close and feel its comfort?

You can if it's part of a prayer quilt.

What is a Prayer Quilt?

The idea behind a prayer quilt is simple.  The patches are sewn together and then put with the backing.  A heavy thread is used to make stitches through the quilt layers and the ends are left free to be tied by members of the congregation when the quilt is hung in the church. As each knot is tied, a silent prayer is said.  Each knot, therefore, represents a prayer for the person who will receive the quilt.

Who is a Prayer Quilt for?

Anyone who needs special prayers and support such as those facing surgery, illness, a crisis, bereavement or just for being a special person.

"Sewn together with love and prayers"

A Quilt needs to be sponsored.

The sponsor must ask the recipient for permission, request the quilt from the group and deliver the completed quilt.

Quilts suitable for men, women and children can be made.

When a quilt is finished, it will be taken into St Andrew's Church.  Once in the church, it will be blessed and people are invited to say a prayer as they tie a knot in the cords that bind the quilt together.

Who makes the Prayer Quilts?

Members of the church and other community mermbers make the prayer quilts.  They do not need to be experienced quilters or sewers.  People who can cut or iron, who are willing to learn new skills, can make a great cup of coffee or who are just generally supportive are all welcome.

The Prayer Quilt Group meets on the last Wednesday of the month : 10am-3pm in the Parish Centre.  Come and go as you like. Bring lunch if you like.
